I just found this info on the Akai website (not sure if you've seen it), and it says the Ewi USB will work as a controller for most DAW's (including Ableton), but to get all the expressiveness from it, you just need to know which CC#'s it needs for things like volume control, pitchbend, octave control, and ambrature (and whatever else it can do natively). If it is compatible and we both get one it would be good if we could keep in touch. I bought an Oxygen 61 and was a bit annoyed to find that it doesn't have a midi port so I cannot use it with zero latency on my interface, so I don't want to repeat the mistake of not finding these things out before buying. I need to make sure before I fork out the dosh as I want to use it to record into Ableton. I emailed Akai support about this yesterday, but probably won't get a reply until next week.
I have skimmed the online manual and did not see anything about using it with a DAW. The only use for the midi connection they mention (I think it is physical midi lead) is for controlling physical sound modules.
I noticed that on the Akai website about it using any software synth, but it's a bit confusing because you can get stand-alone software synths and it doesn't say you can use it in a DAW. Without it, it sounded very much like MIDI samples played on a keyboard.īut I'll be very interested to hear from those who are, or have used the EWI with Ableton, because it's one of those devices that makes me want to lighten my bank account. The main one I was testing it on was a cello, and it seriously sounded almost real with breath control added in. It's a project I put on hold, as my mic was a crappy $10 P.O.J., but I now have a very decent AKG, so I need to finish the experimenting, because it is really impressive sounding when combining breath/tongue to the instruments. I've been experimenting with using a microphone to add much more realistic expressiveness to orchestral instruments in Ableton Suite using breath (controls volume & vibrato) and tongue (to add staccato & non legato), and it makes it sound so much closer to a real instrument than just using the keyboards. So, I would have to say it will work just fine (think of the bite & breath control as similar to the pitchbend wheel & modulation wheel on a keyboard: they are merely modifiers for the MIDI input from the device). Would just need to use the MIDI port on the 4000s since it has no USB)) (( *EDIT: was thinking of the EWI USB when I wrote that. et Cie, S.C.A., 22-24 Boulevard Royal, L-2449, Luxembourg.I've been interested in this device as well (former clarinet & bass clarinet player).Īccording the to video on the Akai website, it will work with any software synth that uses usb-to-MIDI (just like my MPK61 is attached via the USB rather than MIDI).
